Cartography

The Cartography collection holds around 7,100 titles composed of both printed and manuscript atlases, maps and plans that have been made and/or published since the 16th century. Although the collection includes cartographic representations of every part of the world, the majority of the items portray Portugal and its former overseas domains.

The value of the collection is essentially historical. It was initially formed in the 1970’s by transferring documents from the Rare Book and Manuscript collections, but it is constantly growing, especially thanks to the mandatory legal deposit of cartographic items published in Portugal.

Access
The Cartography Reading Room is located on 2nd floor and has seating for 10. There is free access to a collection of reference works, especially catalogues of cartographic collections and titles on the history of cartography.

Anyone with a Reader’s Card can access this collection. For the general terms and conditions governing access, see Regulations.
